Blacksmiths up and down the land rose to the demands of war, by producing shoes for the thousands of horses involved in army work.

Over the course of the war, Britain lost more than 484,000 horses, one horse for every two men. In just one day during 1916 for instance, some 7,000 horses died at the Battle of Verdun.
