Honley Remembers

The aim of this website and the celebrations is to commemorate the impact of both World Wars on Honley. Not only to remember the men who went away to fight and did not return, but also the men who returned to rebuild their lives in a peacetime Britain. We also celebrate the men and women who remained behind, supporting the war efforts on the home front. The mill workers who dyed the cloth for uniforms, nurses at our own village hospital set up in what is now Trinity Church, munitions workers, blacksmiths, butchers, bakers, and candlestick makers – they all had their part to play, and we honour them all.

The 2019 Peace Day celebrations were much more than a weekend of entertainment. Our aim is to leave a lasting legacy with a commemorative Information Board that depicts the lives of the time, as well as a Remembrance Bench, both located in the People’s Park in the centre of Honley. This website was created to be a valuable teaching aid for the future and a reminder of all the sacrifices made by our community across both World Wars.

During Peace Day 2019, the Civic Society held an exhibition in the Village Hall alongside a Vintage Tea Party – a trip down memory lane with Simon Wood on the accordion.

Events in the People’s Park included a memorable evening concert featuring the Honley Ladies and Honley Male Voice Choirs along with the Yorkshire Traction Silver Band, presenting a wonderful programme of music.

Peace Day 2019 was a whole Village coming together with the Honley Village Community Trust, Honley Business Association, The Civic Society, Schools, Choirs, Scouts, Band, Library, Graveyard Team and Churches all working together to remember the people of our village.
